Okee and the homestead hogs
This is the homesteading part of the farm. Okee, the RV pig, is a Yorkshire cross gift from a friend of ours. She has a funny story that you can read about here. Eventually Okee bred to a berkshire cross and had piglets which, to our surprise, when they were ready to wean and sell, they sold in less than 24 hours and for a great price. We did keep a couple. Another sow to raise and a couple to put in the freezer when the time came. Our pasture raised pigs grew fast and our neighbor begged for our freezer sow to keep for breeding so we made another good sell! Pasture pigs are sweet, happy and delicious. We could not believe how good it was, actually, compared to the commercially available pork.
Our pigs cross graze with the horses, cows and goats and do quite well on pasture. We occasionally blog about our swine exploits and adventures in our Sweet Sow Category.
